Nagcarlan was first colonized in 1571 by Juan de Salcedo and founded in 1578 by Franciscan priests Juan de Plasencia and Diego Oropesa. Father Tomas de Miranda built the church in 1583 with light materials and dedicated it to Saint Bartholomew. Fr. Vicente Velloc established a cemetery in 1845 below Mt. San Cristobal as a public resting place. The cemetery includes a chapel, an underground crypt, and the expanded St. Bartholomew Parish Church and rectory. Pilgrims visit the church to pray before images of St. Bartholomew and San Diego de Alcala, known for their miraculous healing. Locals believe in a hidden tunnel called “the Jewel of Nagcarlan.”
Nagcarleños have a legend about a hidden tunnel in Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery, believed to be connected behind the church’s Altar. Franciscan Father Vicente Belloc, who supposedly knew the secret, protected it until his death. Many still believe that finding the “Jewel of Nagcarlan” leads to the Hidden Tunnel and Mount Banahaw.
