Embark on a Scenic Ride Through Mindoro

Mindoro, an island located in the western-central region of the Philippines, is situated across the Verde Island Passage from Luzon (northeast) and between the Mindoro Strait (southwest) and the Tablas Strait (southeast). Unlike the majority of its sister islands, Mindoro is characterized by the absence of deep coastal embayments or fringing islets.

The island’s mountainous core stretches for 160 kilometers along its entire length, surrounded by a fragmented coastal plain that is widest along the eastern shore. Lake Naujan and Mount Halcon (2,585 meters), the island’s highest peak, are situated in the northeastern region. Steep-sided valleys are formed by rivers, including the Pandan, Ibod, and Bongabong. Notably, the tamaraw, a small water buffalo endemic to Mindoro, is a unique feature of the island’s fauna.

Beginning with the historic town of Abra de Ilog, established by Spanish missionaries in the 17th century, riders embark on an eastward journey to Calapan, the capital of Oriental Mindoro. This route offers a combination of smooth paved roads and more rugged, unpaved sections that have recently undergone improvements for enhanced accessibility. Along the way, motorcycle riders have the opportunity to visit local markets and connect with the indigenous Mangyan communities, whose vibrant traditions contribute to the cultural richness of the experience.

Continuing northward, the ride leads to Puerto Galera, a coastal paradise renowned for its picturesque beaches and thriving marine life. Riders are treated to breathtaking views of the coastline and the West Philippine Sea. A visit to the Puerto Galera Heritage Museum provides an insightful perspective on the area’s rich history and cultural significance.
